Our History
In October 2014, the PA Genetic Counselor Task Force met to discuss a number of issues that impact genetic counselors across the state. Attendees felt strongly that we needed a formal state organization to address ongoing topics and issues relevant to our profession. The Executive Board was nominated by this group to begin the process of meeting with an attorney to establish a 501(c)(6) non-profit, tax exempt organization.
An informal kick-off gathering was held in October of 2015 at the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Annual Education Conference (AEC) in Pittsburgh to spread awareness and obtain feedback regarding current needs of genetic counselors in PA. |
Since that time we have successfully hosted a Webinar in October of 2016 and our first annual Spring AEC in April of 2017. Our executive board is also actively involved with advocates in the genetics community to explore opening and amending PA Licensure Law. More information about current efforts can be found in our Member Center.
As the Fall of 2017 approaches, we are excited to announce our incorporation as a 501 (c)(6) non-profit organization and pending status as an NSGC-affiliated State Chapter. Our next goals as an organization are to formalize membership status and get our committees up and running. There are great opportunities on the horizon for those who would like to volunteer their time and experience to support the needs of our growing genetic counseling community in PA. Please visit our Committees Page for more information about specific projects and be sure to email us at PennsylvaniaGC@gmail.com if interested!
